That was the good advice, which Anne Staeves got from the waxing team the day before the Nordenskiöldsrace 2018. As you by now know for sure: the Nordenskiöldsrace is 220 km and the world’s toughest cross-country skiing race.
What you not might know is, that the conditions for the race 2018 were even tougher an normal: The day before the race the sun was shining, so even on the days after. But when the skiiers started and the whole day, it was snowing, which made skiing more strenous by far! However, it seems that the good advice was helpful: Anne crossed the finish line after 25 hours, 33 minutes and 50 seconds.
Anne has a background in long-distance and ultra-distance running, but started to ski more professionell first in 2010. Even after having done the Vasalopp (90 km) it seemed almost impossible first. But Anne tells us ”And then I heared from Nordenskiöldsloppet. But 220 kilometers ??? […] I can not even stay awake as long as I would need mathematically. That’s not for me! ”
But as Anne knows and loves the area from summer hiking in the mountains, the idea will not let go. ”I can try it, but I can stop at any time, if it gets too much. If, for example, I only get to the turning point in Årrenjarka, that’s great too … ”Gradually, the fixed idea becomes the decision. My loved ones affirms and supports me.”
If you want to read more about her journey to successfully doing the race you can do so – Anne has written a great article (in German) which you can find here!
